Spring Furnace Filter Reminder

What Grey Bruce Homeowners Need to Know

Spring has arrived in Grey Bruce, and while most of us are thinking about cleaning out the garage or getting the lawn ready, there’s one simple maintenance task that’s easy to overlook — and it can cost you.

Changing your furnace filter.

It takes five minutes, it’s inexpensive, and it makes a real difference in your home’s air quality and energy efficiency. Here’s everything you need to know.

Why Spring Is the Right Time to Change Your Filter

Your furnace has been running hard all winter. By the time April rolls around in Owen Sound, Meaford, or Wiarton, that filter has collected months of dust, pet dander, and debris. As you open windows and spring pollen fills the air, a clogged filter makes all of it worse — recirculating allergens instead of trapping them.

A dirty filter also forces your furnace and air handler to work harder to move air through your home. That means higher energy bills, more wear and tear on your equipment, uneven heating and cooling as the season transitions, and potential overheating of your system.

It’s one of those small things that quietly costs you money when ignored.

How to Know If Your Filter Needs Replacing

You don’t need a technician for this check. Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light source. If you can barely see light through it, it’s time for a new one.

As a general rule of thumb, 1-inch filters should be replaced every 1–3 months, 4-inch filters can often last 6–12 months, and homes with pets or allergy sufferers should change more frequently.

Not sure what filter size or MERV rating is right for your system? Give us a call at (519) 372-2978 — we’re happy to point you in the right direction.

What Happens If You Ignore It?

A severely clogged filter can cause your furnace to overheat and trigger a safety shutoff. In worst-case scenarios, restricted airflow can damage the heat exchanger — one of the most expensive components in your system to replace. A $20 filter swap can prevent a $1,000+ repair. The math is pretty straightforward.
